2004 Golf Scramble for Hope at The Point

The Scramble for Hope at the Point was chaired by Ken Koontz and assisted by Joy Self. Joy was the wife of John Self, whose name is on the trophy presented to the low net and gross teams. All but one individual team from last year signed up early in March to play again this year. In addition, most of these teams contributed an additional $250 to participate in the auction and the field was completely filled once the corporate sponsors signed up.

The golf event netted approximately $39,000 – somewhat less than 2003 due to elimination of the silent auction and the decision to share corporate sponsorships with the auction.

2004 Auction for Hope at The Point

Heinz & Debbie Little

Chaired by Heinz Little with significant help from his wife Debbie Little, the inaugural Auction for Hope at the Point was a tremendous success. Dedicated to the memory of Doug Shierson, a Point member who had recently died of cancer, the event had a special meaning to Heinz and Debbie who were very close to Doug and his wife Fern. Many friends of Doug from the Point, Michigan and other areas around the country attended the event. The “Country Formal” theme was embraced by many who attended and good time was had by all. Most importantly, the event was a fund raising success, netting approximately $99,000 through sponsorships, donations, sales of auction items and ticket sales.

Thanks to the generous efforts of so many, the Hope at The Point Foundation increased its charitable contributions in 2004 by 100% as compared to 2003. In 2003 we contributed $53,000 to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke for research. In 2004 we contributed $40,000 to Duke, $32,000 to the Dove House in Statesville and $32,000 to the Hospice of Iredell County. These contributions were made on behalf of our sponsors, individual contributors and the members of The Point Lake and Golf Club. Three significant events impacted the structure, objectives, and mission of our organization in 2004.
